Section 317 Vaccine Purchasing: The Challenge of Keeping Pace with New Vaccines

This AIM presentation was given at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2024 National Immunization Conference (NIC) on the Section 317 vaccine purchasing and the challenge of keeping pace with new vaccines. Section 317 provides funding for the purchase of vaccine for uninsured adults and outbreak response. Despite the addition of several vaccines to CDC’s adult immunization schedule, Section 317 funding has been relatively fixed. Comparing Section 317 funding to the cost of adult vaccines provides important insight into the challenges associated with vaccinating uninsured adults. The presentation also gave an overview on the challenge of vaccinating uninsured adult populations with limited public funding, providing examples from three jurisdictions.
