View a focus group research design schematic and accompanying moderator guide created by the Cuyahoga County Board of Health (CCBH) in Parma, Ohio. CCBH created these resources to engage with African-American and Latinx county residents and gauge their awareness, opinions, and behaviors related to COVID-19 and flu. CCBH sought to learn what barriers and motivators these populations had to obtaining vaccines and boosters. CCBH also strove to assess participants’ knowledge about a range of chronic diseases and underlying health conditions that disproportionately impact Black and Brown communities, as well as how these residents both prevented and managed health challenges, including infectious diseases. With this understanding, CCBH’s goal was to improve health outcomes among the county’s medically underserved citizens. Focus group discussion guide used for research purposes to help the CCBH improve health outcomes related to COVID-19 and flu. People working on public health messaging and community outreach can use the detailed moderator guide as an example of how to conduct a focus group, including what kinds of questions to ask.
